July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day. Are your pet kids safe?
To raise awareness of how many pets are affected by home fires each year and the potential of pets starting fires, American Kennel Club (AKC) and ADT teamed up a few years ago to start an annual fire safety day. Below are some interesting statistics along with some tips on how to prepare your house and pets for fire safety.
By the numbers:
- Every year an estimated 500,000 are affected by fires
- Nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by pets
- 40,000 pets die each year in house fires
- A home fire is reported every 80 seconds with an average of 350,000 - 400,000 residential fires a year in the U.S.
Tips to Keep Pets Safe:
- Extinguish open flames & invest in flameless candles
- Use monitored smoke detectors so emergency responders can be contacted when you're not home
- Use pet alert window clings
