Creative Writing- Photographing Shelter Pets - Submitted by Becky Willuweit

Rescue/shelter work

When I was little, I always want to volunteer with working with animals. Of course the only humane society was an hour away. And when I was younger, there was no running around with the car. There was no way my parents would have let me drive all the way over to Sioux Falls to volunteer.

So now that I am older, and only live 30 minutes away from a humane society, I am able to finally do something that I love. I am able to photograph these pets to help them find a home.  I have seen what the shelter goes through, while I am there. Truthfully, I’m not sure how they find time to take photos in the first place. Between talking to people interested in pets and cleaning pens … they seem busy all of the time.

The way I think … If I can get one person to see a photo I take, maybe, just maybe they will fall in love with that pet.  And if they fall in love with a pet through a photo, that will get that person to call in and talk about that pet, or even get them into the shelter to look at that pet. Maybe the one they fell in love with is not the right fit for them, but maybe they can find one that is.

For me, it is me, sharing a talent to help some pets. There are also some downsides of what I do. I, myself, have fallen in love with a couple of the babies myself. And it breaks my heart that I have to leave them there.

For anyone looking to help a rescue/shelter … there are many different things you can do. I have seen kids selling lemonade to raise money to donate.  They are always in need of food, blankets, and other items. If you ever have a fundraising idea, it’s nice to send it their way. EVERY little bit helps.
